Not sure what could be the cause if he's using a clean, vanilla version of MC - should work fine.

You could possibly try increasing the RAM assigned to your version go into your Launcher > Launch Options > Make sure 'Advanced settings' is on and select your version > in the JVM arguments section change the one in "-Xmx1G" to a higher number (something like 2, 3 or 4, depending on how much memory you can spare)
I don't fully understand what's wrong, but this may work.

As stated by @TNTDragonMC that can be a possible fix. So give it a try.
Then if that fails, feel free to read the information below.

I myself do believe that fixing it, is a bit more complicated then just the RAM allocated to the application itself.

Do you know which version he runs the game on?
I've heard a lot of people struggling with similar issues with the latest 1.13 update. (Also seen lots of support threads about it on various Minecraft forums)
That being said, if you could ask your friend to try using other versions of the game, such as: 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.11 or 1.12.
And let us know if anything has changed?

    Side note:
There could be changes to the game when it updates, that could cause issues for some computers to run, even after the latest changes.
Also, if he hasn't already, downloading the latest Java version is highly recommended.
